IRS computer problems shut down tax return e-File system

The IRS stopped accepting electronically filed tax returns Wednesday because of problems with some of its computer systems. The outage could affect refunds, but the agency said it doesn't anticipate "major disruptions."

Preparer tax identification number (PTIN) applications and renewals for 2016 are now being processed.

Anyone who preparers or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid 2016 PTIN before preparing returns. All enrolled agents must also have a PTIN.

Prior Year Returns

ExacTax processes all prior year returns from 2002 through 2012. These returns are processed on a daily basis. After you have reviewed the prior year return, call Customer Support to order the proforma for the following year, if needed (applies to years 2005 – 2012).

Note: 2012 returns may still be filed electronically as long as they are not amended returns.
